Description
Overview: In this lab, students construct a tool to measure cellular respiration in baker's yeast and investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of respiration. This lab can be easily expanded to include student-centered investigations. This lab includes an at-home lab option.
Curriculum Connections: cellular respiration, enzyme function, factors that can influence enzyme-catalyzed reactions
Experimental Timing: From start to finish this lab can be completed in a single 45-50 minute class period. For additional information, see "Instructor Planning Guide" in the Teacher Materials.
Specialized Equipment Required: test tubes (25 mm X 200 mm) • hex nuts (3/8 inch stainless steel) • hotplate or microwave *At-home lab is designed to be done with materials that can be found at home.
