Looking beyond the phenotype: Matching phenotypes with genotypes determined by PCR
Description
Experience two PCR-based labs:
Try MassBioEd’s low-cost version of the PTC lab where students will isolate their own DNA and identify their genotype at the TAS2R38 locus. Share the complexity of human genetics by identifying one or more single nucleotide polymorphisms in the gene for the bitter taste receptor.
Make Mendelian genetics come alive for your students by pairing phenotypic observations with genotypic data. Students can observe a phenotypic ratio of 3:1 (purple-stemmed plants : green stemmed plants), and through PCR identify homozygotes and heterozygotes in the purple-stemmed plants.
Attendees can take home the reagents needed to complete one of these labs with up to 40 students.
Massachusetts teachers that complete the workshop and submit a pre- and post-workshop assignment are eligible for 10 PDPs.
All participants can enroll in our equipment lending program.
Lunch will be provided.
